The relationship between satisfaction and self-esteem among nursing students: a descriptive correlational study

Abstract

Background and Objective: Students' satisfaction is a crucial indicator of the quality of education and self-esteem affects the professional behavior of nursing students. This study aimed to examine the relationship between satisfaction and self-esteem among nursing students.
Methods: This descriptive correlational study completed in 2020, a total of 280 final-semester undergraduate nursing students enrolled at the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, were selected through convenience sampling. Participants completed a demographic form, Nursing Student Satisfaction Scale, and Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 25.
Results: The total mean score of nursing student satisfaction was 104.43±27.30 which was at a moderate level. The total mean score of nursing students' self-esteem was 21.29±5.17 which was at a high level. Spearman’s correlation test revealed a significant positive correlation between nursing student satisfaction — and its dimensions including curriculum and teaching, professional and social interaction, and environment —and self-esteem (P < 0.05). Low interest in nursing, unwillingness to work as a nurse after graduation and dormitory living were found to negatively affect student satisfaction. Also, grade point average, low interest in nursing, unwillingness to work as a nurse after graduation and dormitory living were found to negatively affect self-esteem (P < 0.05).
Conclusion: There was a significant positive relationship between nursing students' satisfaction and self-esteem. Therefore, providing appropriate educational conditions and enhancing students' satisfaction during nursing education may contribute to the development of their self-esteem.
