Abstract

Background and Aims: Hospital accreditation is one of the key indicators for evaluating the quality of healthcare services, and its successful implementation depends on the awareness, positive attitudes, and appropriate performance of healthcare staff, particularly surgical technologists. This study aimed to assess the levels of awareness, attitudes, and performance of surgical technologists in teaching hospitals affiliated with Iran University of Medical Sciences, and to identify their educational needs.
Materials and Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with the participation of 183 randomly selected surgical technologists from nine hospitals. Awareness and attitude data were collected using a standardized questionnaire, and performance data were obtained through a researcher-developed checklist. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 20, employing descriptive statistical methods including frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation.
Results: The findings indicated that 89.88% of hospitals had a good level of awareness regarding accreditation principles, with the highest mean scores observed in Motahari (37.85) and Ali Asghar (36.71) hospitals. However, 77.77% of participants had negative attitudes, with the lowest scores recorded in Firoozgar Hospital. Overall performance was rated as poor to moderate (mean score 17.33±6.96), with five hospitals classified as moderate and four as poor. No significant association was observed between awareness or attitudes and gender, although higher education was associated with greater awareness, and associate degree holders exhibited more positive attitudes than those with bachelor's or master’s degrees. Age and work experience showed no significant associations.
Conclusion: Given the results, the mismatch between knowledge, attitudes, and performance may negatively impact the quality of surgical services and patient safety. Therefore, the development of educational programs, attitude modification, and the establishment of supervisory guidelines are essential to improve performance.
