Abstract

Background and Aims: Self-efficacy affects self-care behaviors in patients with heart failure. The teach-back method is designed to enhance patients’ understanding of health education. This study aimed to determine the effect of education using the teach-back method on self-efficacy and readmission of patients with heart failure.
Materials and Methods: In this randomized controlled clinical trial, 62 eligible patients with heart failure hospitalized in Imam Reza and Ghaem hospitals in Mashhad, Iran were selected by a convenience sampling method and randomly allocated to two intervention and control groups. In the intervention group, self-care education was implemented individually by the teach-back method for 3-4 days, and the control group received routine education. The Sullivan Cardiac Self-Efficacy Questionnaire was completed by the patients before the intervention and one month after discharge, and the rate of readmission was assessed one month after discharge .Then, the data were analyzed.
Results: The results showed that the two groups were homogeneous in terms of individual and confounding variables. Before the intervention, there was no statistically significant difference in the mean scores of self-efficacy between the two groups (P˃0.05). However, after the intervention, the mean score of self-efficacy in the intervention group increased significantly compared to the control group (P<0.001). There was no statistically significant difference in terms of the rate of readmission within one month after the intervention between the two groups (P˃0.70)
Conclusion: Education using teach-back method improves the self-efficacy of patients with heart failure, so this method is recommended for teaching these patients to improve their self-efficacy and health.
