Abstract

Background and Aims: Marriage, particularly among university students, is an important social issue. This study aimed to examine the social and individual attitudes of students at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences toward marriage.
Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2024 at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences. The study population included all students in the medical sciences field, from which 470 students were selected using Cochran’s formula. The research instrument was the Braten and Rosen Marriage Attitude Questionnaire. Data were analyzed using SPSS software, version 26.
Results: Among the participants, 51% were female and 49% were male, while 78% were single and 53% were enrolled in medical programs. The results indicated that women had a more idealistic attitude toward marriage than men. Additionally, an increase in age and the number of children was associated with a more pessimistic attitude toward marriage.
Conclusion: The study shows significant gender differences in attitudes toward marriage, with women holding more idealistic views than men. It underscores the importance of developing educational and counseling programs in universities, especially early in students' education, to promote more realistic perspectives on marriage and support healthier relationship attitudes among young adults.
