Abstract

Background and Aims: Blood sugar control in patients with prediabetes is an important step in preventing the occurrence of diabetes in the community. This study aimed to determine the effect of a community-based empowerment intervention on blood sugar levels in middle-aged patients with prediabetes referring to comprehensive health service centers in Mashhad.
Methods: In this clinical trial study, 84 patients with prediabetes who referred to four health service centers affiliated with Mashhad Health Center No. 1, were selected using purposive sampling and randomly assigned to two intervention and control groups. The community-based empowerment intervention was held for 6 weeks with educational content in the fields of nutrition, physical activity, and stress management. Fasting blood sugar was measured once before and once a week after the intervention using a calibrated glucometer, and the data were analyzed using SPSS.26 and statistical tests.
Results: Before the intervention, fasting blood sugar levels in the two groups were not significantly different (P>0.05), but after the implementation of the community-based empowerment intervention, this difference became significant (P<0.05).
Conclusion: Community-based empowerment interventions can be effective in controlling blood sugar levels in people with prediabetes, so the use of these interventions at the level of community health service centers is recommended
