Abstract

Background and Aims: Care, as one of the most important roles of nurses, is considered the main pillar of nursing. Nowadays, nursing care quality is neglected due to various reasons, leading to unfulfilled nursing duties and responsibilities, known as missed nursing care. This review was conducted to assess the prevalence of missed nursing care and its associated factors among nurses working in Iranian hospitals.
Materials and Methods: This systematic review was conducted in 2024 by searching English-language databases (Scopus, PubMed, and Web of science) to gather publications from 1980 to 2024. Persian databases (Sid, Magiran, Irandoc, and Iranmedex) were also searched to obtain relevant literature published between 1370 and 1403. The keywords included missed care and nursing (and their Persian equivalents), as well as Iran.
Results: Among the studies reviewed, 3 articles had been published in foreign journals and 8 articles in domestic journals. The results showed that missed nursing care was a significant problem in Iranian hospitals. Shortages in human resources (e.g., lack of staff, high workload) and material resources were reported as the most important factors contributing to missed nursing care.
Conclusion: The results of this review underlined the importance and necessity of addressing missed nursing care in Iranian hospitals. It is recommended to implement appropriate and practical policies to achieve better and more standard nursing care in hospitals.
