Investigating the quality of mental health and quality of life in parents of children with autism spectrum disorder in Shahrood city

Abstract

Background and Aims: Parents of children with autism disorders are more susceptible to psychiatric disorders than parents of children with normal development, this study was conducted to recognize and help family members, especially mothers of children with this disorder.
Materials and Methods: The current research is a cross-sectional descriptive-analytical study that was conducted with the aim of investigating the quality of mental health and the quality of life of parents of children with autism in Shahrood city in Islamic Azad University in 1400-1401. The sample size includes all the parents who are members of the Autism Center who met the inclusion criteria, 35 people were counted. Sampling was purposeful. Questionnaire (GHQ) was used to evaluate the level of mental health and questionnaire (WHO-QOL) was used to evaluate the quality of life.
Results: In the study population, consisting of 30 mothers and 5 fathers . There was no significant difference in the subscales of quality of life between fathers and mothers of children with autism, only the mean score for social functioning was significantly higher in mothers compared to fathers. Additionally, no significant associations were observed between variables such as age, level of education, number of children, and the level of quality of life and mental health.
Conclusion: The quality of life and mental health of parents with children with autism, especially the mothers of the family, is not at a suitable level, which requires the development of health and treatment programs.
