Abstract

Introduction: Pressure ulcers are among the major complication of medical and surgical medicine. The present study aimed to determine the relationship between nurses' knowledge and quality of care in the prevention of pressure ulcers in Intensive Care Units (ICU) of hospitals in Bojnurd, Iran.
Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on nurses working in the ICUs of hospitals in Bojnord, Iran, using the census sampling method in 2017. The needed data were collected by a demographic questionnaire, the Piper nurses' knowledge questionnaire, and a nursing care quality assessment checklist. The nursing care regarding the prevention of pressure ulcers was observed three times, and its quality was evaluated and registered in the checklist. Therefore,  the knowledge assessment questionnaire was completed by nurses. Data were analyzed in SPSS software (version 200 using descriptive and analytical statistics.
Results: Based on inclusion criteria, the current study was conducted on a total of 29 nurses the majority of whom (96.6%) were female with a bachelor's degree in nursing. The results pointed to low levels of nurses' knowledge and quality of nursing care regarding pressure ulcers. Moreover, there was no significant relationship between nurses' knowledge and quality of nursing care (P=0.31).
Conclusion: Low levels of knowledge and inadequate quality of nursing care regarding pressure ulcers are a matter of concern in hospitals. It is essential to conduct further studies to identify the underlying causes in this regard.
