Abstract
Introduction: Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) is the best set of tools introduced by the World Health Organization to identify and make decisions on planning in the field of health and even the treatment of the elderly. This study aimed to comprehensively determine the health status of the elderly residing at homes and nursing homes in Sabzevar, Iran.
Materials and Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 254 elderly people residing at homes and nursing homes in Sabzevar, Iran, during 2018. The sampling was performed using the multi-stage census and clustering method for the elderly residing at nursing homes and those residing at homes, respectively. The data were collected through standard tools related to the comprehensive assessment of the elderly, including Activities of Daily Living, Mini-mental State Examination, Tinetti, Geriatric Depression Scale, Mini Nutrition Assessment, Instrumental Activities of Daily Living, and Abbreviated Mental Test. The obtained data were then analyzed in SPSS software (version 22) through independent t-test, ANOVA, and chi-square tests. A p-value less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant.
Results: The mean ages of the elderly at homes and nursing homes were obtained at 71±10.4 and 65±9.05 years, respectively. Moreover, about 85% and 80% of the elderly at homes and nursing homes had adequate nutrition intake, respectively. Furthermore, the prevalence rates of depression in the elderly living at homes and nursing homes were estimated at 61% and 53%, respectively; however, those residing in nursing homes were more depressed, compared to the elderly living at homes. About 65% of the elderly living in homes and 78% of the elderly living in nursing homes (P 25) had cognitive impairment. The elderly living at home and 71% of the elderly living in care centers were in relatively good physical condition. This is while Most of the elderly living at home were in good condition in terms of balance and walking (74%). This situation is in most elderly living in the centers. Maintenance was poor and they were at relatively high risk of falling (69%).
Conclusion: Elderly people living at nursing homes are more incapable of performing most aspects of health, such as daily activities and cognitive function, compared to other elderly people in the community. The high prevalence of depression and the risk of malnutrition in them indicate the urgent need for special attention in the field of health to the elderly. He is a resident of maintenance centers.
